Huge Pro-Syrian Protest Held in Beirut

http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=C1262C:2F72C9D

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah used the forum to warn the United
States not to interfere in Lebanon

Protesters hold an anti-American banner during a pro-Syrian
demonstration in BeirutMore than 100,000 protesters have held a mass
rally in Beirut to support Syria's military presence in Lebanon, and
show their opposition to U.S.-led efforts to get Syria to leave.

Waving Lebanese flags and chanting pro-Syrian slogans, the huge crowd
occupied one of Beirut's main squares to vent their anger at the
United States and Israel, and to express solidarity with Syria.

The rally was organized by the pro-Syrian Hezbollah militant group,
listed as a terrorist organization by the United States.

The size of the crowd appeared to dwarf previous demonstrations by
anti-Syrian protesters who want Syria's troops out of Lebanon.

The rally comes amid a U.S.-led campaign for Syria to immediately
remove all of its 14,000 troops from the country. Syria has announced
a pullback to Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley, a move that Washington
calls a half-measure.

Abbas Says Delays By Israel Undermining Peace Process

http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=C12630:2F72C9D

Mr. Abbas says Israel has been slow to act on release of prisoners and
its promise to withdraw from parts of West Bank

Mahmoud Abbas Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas says delays by Israel
in carrying out promises made in a recent ceasefire deal are
undermining the peace process.

In comments to the Palestinian parliament Tuesday, Mr. Abbas said
Israel has been slow to act on the release of prisoners and its
promise to withdraw from parts of the West Bank.

He made his remarks ahead of a meeting later today with Israeli
Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz. They are expected to discuss the
handover to the Palestinian Authority of the West Bank town of
Tulkarem.

Their talks will be the highest-level discussions between the two
sides since last month's historic summit in Egypt, where Israel and
the Palestinians signed a truce aimed at renewing the peace process.

Lebanon Taps Karami as Prime Minister

http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=C1DD68:2F72C9D

Omar Karami, who is seen as a strong supporter of Syria, says he wants
opposition to join his cabinet in a government of national unity

Omar Karami Lebanese President Emile Lahoud has reappointed as prime
minister Omar Karami, who resigned 10 days ago in the face of massive
demonstrations over the assassination of his predecessor.

Mr. Karami, who is seen as a strong supporter of Syria, says he wants
the opposition to join his cabinet in a government of national unity
to prepare for elections in May.

Mr. Karami says the opposition will be responsible for what he calls a
catastrophe if they refuse his offer, and he says any delay would lead
to what he terms "destruction."

Opposition leaders, however, quickly rejected the offer, saying Mr.
Karami is controlled by Syria and cannot be neutral in setting up the
elections.

Mr. Karami took office in October when former Prime Minister Rafik
Hariri resigned in a dispute with President Lahoud. Mr. Hariri was
killed in an explosion on February 14, leading to mass protests that
forced Mr. Karami to resign two weeks later.

UN Envoy: Syria Promises Total Pullout from Lebanon

http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=C29EEF:2F72C9D

Announcement follows talks between Terje Roed-Larsen and Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad in the northern Syrian town of Aleppo A
senior U.N. diplomat says Syria has promised a total withdrawal of
military and intelligence personnel from Lebanon as demanded by the
U.N. Security Council.

Terje Roed-LarsenThe announcement follows talks between U.N. envoy
Terje Roed-Larsen and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the northern
Syrian town of Aleppo.

The U.N. office in Beirut has issued a statement saying President
Assad has committed Syria to fulfill U.N. Security Council resolution
1559, which demands a complete withdrawal of 14,000 Syrian troops. The
pullout agreement also covers Syrian intelligence personnel, widely
accused by Lebanese opposition leaders of manipulating Lebanese
politics.

The U.N. statement adds that Mr. Roed-Larsen will give details of the
timetable for the pullout to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan early
next week in New York.

Mr. Roed-Larsen pressed Mr. Assad for the timetable one week after the
Syrian leader had announced a redeployment of Syrian forces to
Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley.

Syrian troops remove tank on transporter, as they leave position in
Daher El-Baidar mountain region of LebanonHowever, convoys of Syrian
troops also have begun crossing the border with Lebanon to return
home. According to Lebanese defense officials, Syria has pulled all of
its troops out of northern Lebanon, though some intelligence posts in
the region are still manned.

Syria has been under intense international pressure to get out of
Lebanon since the February 14 assassination of former Lebanese prime
minister Rafik Hariri.  Many Lebanese opposition supporters blame
Syria for the killing, though Damascus denies involvement.

Syrian troops first entered Lebanon in 1976 under an Arab League
mandate to quell a civil war, and at its height Syria had about 40,000
soldiers in Lebanon.
