Vice President Dick Cheney will speak at a town hall meeting about Social Security on Friday at Burlington County College, the White House said Tuesday.

The event, Cheney's second visit to the county in six months, will be part of the "60 Stops in 60 Days" tour, during which administration officials and policy experts will promote President Bush's proposal to allow younger workers to invest some of their Social Security taxes.

"We're just stopping all over," said Jenny Mayfield of the vice president's office. "Between the president and the various administration officials, we're just trying to cover a lot of territory."

Cheney is scheduled to appear in the college's gymnasium at 11:45 a.m. Friday.

The vice president, who led a campaign rally at Lenape High School on Oct. 11, is expected to be on stage alone, speak for about 10 minutes and then take questions from the audience.

The president wants to let younger workers take some of the money they pay in Social Security taxes and invest it in the stock market through personal savings accounts. Failing to act, he has said, will lead to a crisis.

The AARP hosted a town meeting in February in Cherry Hill, at which U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, D-Hoboken, and U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, D-Haddon Heights, criticized Bush's plan, contending it would result in steep cuts in benefits and plunge the nation into debt.

Roughly 1.36 million New Jersey residents received Social Security benefits in 2003, according to the Social Security Administration.
