State's 21st scenic byway hugs lake
Wednesday, April 20, 2005
Molly Kavanaugh
Plain Dealer Reporter
When it comes to scenic Lake Erie, the Marblehead Lighthouse ranks at the top - unless you're a driver trying to see the sights.

For 15 years, the self-guided Lake Erie Circle Tour has directed motorists primarily along U.S. 6 and Ohio 2, bypassing the lighthouse and other picturesque attractions.

That will change this week. The Lake Erie Coastal Trail, the state's 21st scenic byway, will take the place of the Circle Tour. The new route will hug the lake and lead to the steps of attractions like the lighthouse.

Gov. Bob Taft will dedicate the 293-mile trail Friday in Ashtabula Harbor.

"It's a great privilege," said Melinda Huntley, executive director of Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Inc., a nonprofit tourism organization that promoted the change.

The designation also is the first step toward becoming a national All-American Road, which means more exposure on maps and grants for historic preservation. Huntley will find out next summer whether the byway earns the designation from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, the state scenic label will show up soon on brochures throughout the region. Huntley is working on a guide to Lake Erie's 16 lighthouses, the first in a series of specialized maps.

Gretchen Friend, executive director of the Ashtabula County Convention & Visitors Bureau, will distribute a map of beaches and parks along the trail in her county.

"People like to have an itinerary with a starting point and an ending point," she said.

A study by Ohio State University Extension found that most people are willing to change travel plans if they have specific information about attractions.

Bay Village Mayor Debbie Sutherland said her bedroom community is not a tourist draw, but the designation will attract motorists who might decide to move to the lakefront city after seeing the view.

"What's more beautiful than driving by the lake?" she asked.

University denounces supremacists' hate fliers
Thursday, April 21, 2005
Associated Press
Cincinnati- The University of Cincinnati and the school's student newspaper are deploring fliers left on campus that declared, "Don't have sex with blacks - Avoid AIDS!"

Campus police are trying to determine who posted the fliers on information kiosks across campus. The police are investigating it as a possible hate crime, university spokesman Greg Hand said Wednesday.

Several dozen fliers were posted overnight last Thursday. The administration believes that outsiders were responsible, partly because no fliers were found in buildings that students know are high-visibility posting areas, Hand said.

The student newspaper, The News Record, published an opinion column on Monday deploring the handbills. The newspaper's decision to publish part of the flier to illustrate the column prompted angry calls to the university Tuesday by people across the country who saw the Internet version of the newspaper and thought the flier was an advertisement.

The columnist Simone Monet-Williams, 22, who found one flier on a campus bulletin board, said she didn't regret the decision to publish the flier in the newspaper.

"When you're able to see it in hand . . . the picture goes a long way," she said.

Monet-Williams, the newspaper's opinion editor, wrote in her column: "The more we ignore the truth behind racism, the more leeway we give racists to infiltrate the system; they already have crept onto this campus at night."

The fliers contained contact information for the National Alliance, a white-supremacy group from Hillsboro, W.Va. The fliers posted on campus can be printed from the National Alliance's Web site, Hand said.

Similar fliers have been dropped in several Cincinnati residential suburbs at night during recent months, he said.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday with the National Alliance's headquarters.

Angry callers to the university on Tuesday erroneously believed that the student newspaper published the flier as an ad, or that the National Alliance is a campus organization, Hand said.

In an open letter published Wednesday in The News Record, a university official condemned the fliers.

"It appears to be the work of outside trespassers," wrote Mitchel Livingston, the university's vice president for student affairs and services. "Sneaking under cover of darkness, they plastered their hateful message as an attack on the values of this university and its community.

"The UC community categorically condemns the National Alliance, and others of its ilk," Livingston wrote. "There is no need to spew your revolting message here."

Some fliers had been torn down before university police and staff could investigate, Hand said. University personnel found 10 to 15 fliers, he said.
