HARRISBURG: On the morning of Monday, May 16th, 11 ducklings hatched in the back yard of the Governor’s Residence on Front Street. For the past month, the First Family has watched in wonderment as two Mallard ducks made their home in the backyard of the Residence and prepared their ducklings for the wild.
Nearly a month earlier on April 19th, Governor Rendell and his two Golden Retrievers, Mandy and Ginger, spotted a nest filled with large eggs in a Residence tulip garden. Once discovered, the Governor requested that an 8 x 10 foot section of the garden be fenced so the ducks and eggs would remain undisturbed.
“It was exciting to watch the progression and preparation leading up to the hatching of the eggs,” Governor Rendell said. “I can only hope that their stay at the Residence encourages the ducklings to grow to be Demo-quacks.”
A few hours after the last ducklings hatched, the sord of ducks departed the Residence and traveled across Front Street, down to the riverbank and into the Susquehanna River. Neither the Governor nor the First Lady was present to witness the event, but the ducks’ journey was caught on tape by the Residence staff for all Pennsylvanians to enjoy.
