On Tuesday May 31, the State Senate will again take up Senate Bill (SB) 42 requiring voters to show a photo ID in order to vote. Given the abuses of our system detailed in the recently released federal-local investigation into the November 2004 elections, it is vital to enact every common sense measure that will stop the corruption and clean things up. As many of you know, Governor Doyle has already vetoed such a measure twice.

The legislature has addressed his concerns about photo ID by including provisions to the bill that would cover the cost of obtaining a state-issued ID for those who can't afford one and eliminating the requirement for seniors who are on a permanent absentee list.

An additional provision of SB 42, which was passed unanimously by the Senate, is an amendment to prevent felons from voting. Considering at least 200 felons voted in last year's elections, this provision is essential to restoring the integrity of our election system.

The abuse needs to stop. I encourage you to call our Democrat Senators and urge passage of SB 42. Tell them to reform the system and restore the faith that every vote counts.

Sincerely,

Rick Graber
Chairman, Wisconsin GOP
