Join local activists in another demonstration at the Silver Spring
Recruiting Station, 8202 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland
at 10:00 am this Saturday, June 18th.
We hope to use this demonstration to launch a campaign in the Silver
Spring - Takoma Park area aimed at confronting the militarization of
our children.
(The station is located three blocks from the Silver Spring Metro at
the intersection of Silver Spring Ave. and Georgia Ave. From the
South Side Metro Exit, walk one block east on Bonifant St. to
Georgia Avenue, then right 2 blocks to the recruiting station.
Driving on Georgia Ave. from DC, the recruiting station is on the
left, about two blocks past East-West Highway (Rt. 410).)
The demonstration is being organized by activists from DAWN, Code
Pink and other groups working under the banner of the DC Counter-
Recruiting End Stop Loss Working Group (DCRESL)
Plans call for organizing a large demonstration at the Silver Spring
station sometime in late July or early August and to hold several
small protests, at times to be determined, indefinitely. We want to
encourage people in groups of two or more to go out there whenever
possible to flyer and protest. Summer is the height of
the "recruiting season" and the Army hopes to make up lost ground.
We'd like to see them fail.
The members of the working group agreed that the purpose of the
action planned for this Saturday, June 18th will be:
1) to have a continuous presence at this recruiting station;
2) to build for an upcoming Silver Spring - Takoma Park community
meeting and;
3) to build for the next large action at the Silver Spring
recruiting station. We will have many small protests, and we
encourage people in groups of two or more to go out there whenever
possible to flyer and protest.
We will organize a Silver Spring - Takoma Park counter-recruitment
community meeting during the week after July 4. We are working on
selecting a date and coming up with a venue for the community
meeting. This event will build for the next large action at the
Silver Spring Recruiting Station; educate folks about the evils of
recruiting; help seed a local community group in Silver Spring
working around these issues; and put pressure on the Montgomery (&
PG) School Boards to allow counter-recruiting literature like the
brochures found on these sites: http://www.afsc.org/youthmil &
http://comdsd.org/yano_web/ to be available everywhere military
recruiting literature is found on public school property. We will
demand access for individuals and groups to speak to students about
the drawbacks to joining the military and alternatives to military
service.
