Associated Press

PORTAGE, Ind. - Nearly 500 people turned out to honor a northwestern Indiana soldier who was killed in Iraq.

A riderless horse escorted the hearse carrying Army Specialist Adam Harting's flag-draped casket at a cemetery in Portage. Doves were released following a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.

Harting, who was 21, was a member of the 69th Armor Regiment of the 42nd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, Ga. He died on July 25 when an explosive detonated near an armored vehicle in Samarra, Iraq.
