Iraq heading towards a new constitution despite Sunni rejection Scotland on Sunday
PARTIAL results from the Iraqi referendum suggest that voters have said 'yes' to the new constitution. Initial returns indicate that just two provinces, the overwhelmingly Sunni Salahuddin and Anbar areas, have rejected the constitution, but that in other areas which were narrowly Sunni, voters have approved the deal. The Kurdish and Shia areas are widely expected to have voted massively in favour.

Hurricane Wilma crashes into Florida Miami Herald
Crashing through the state's back door, Hurricane Wilma made landfall in Florida this morning as a major hurricane and then raced through the state. The dangerous eyewall is now over the western suburbs of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. One man was killed in Coral Springs when he was struck by a falling tree, authorities said. There were no other immediate reports of casualties, but significant damage seemed certain. Millions of people shuddered in shuttered homes as the storm roared through the lower half of the repeatedly battered state. Wilma is the eighth hurricane to strike or brush Florida in 14 months.

Poland's victorious right vows quick cabinet deal Reuters
Poland's conservatives, buoyed by the presidential victory of their leader Lech Kaczynski, set a Saturday target for forging a government with their pro-business Civic Platform allies. Kaczynski, who combines traditional, Catholic values with scepticism about free-market economics, won the Sunday run-off against the Platform's Donald Tusk on a promise to root out corruption and protect the welfare state. The zloty dipped on Monday, reflecting market concern that Kaczynski's victory tips the balance in favour of a party sceptical about deep fiscal and market reforms.

Miers would lose - Chuck New York Daily News
The Supreme Court nomination of Harriet Miers is in trouble and would fail if the Senate had to vote now, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said yesterday. "She would not get a majority either in the Judiciary Committee or the floor," Schumer, a Democrat on the committee, said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "I think you have concern on these three areas - qualifications, independence, judicial philosophy - by people of both parties in all political stripes," he said. But most of the criticism of President Bush's choice of Miers to replace Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has come from conservatives.

'Russia's trying to save the Syrians' Ynetnews
While the Americans are considering which steps to take against Syria in the U.N. Security Council session on Tuesday in which the U.N. report on the murder of Hariri will be presented, a senior diplomatic source in New York tells Ynet that "the toughest nut to crack is Russia, which is trying to save the Syrians".
