Dear Friend,
I can hardly believe that, already, we are nearing the end of the year. Perhaps, though, the end of this year is a good thing.
2005 has been a memorable year. Unfortunately, too many of the memories that I will take away have to do with the failure of Washington to address the challenges of the future:
* The globalization of the world's economy and the greatest threat to the American middle class since the Great Depression.
* Our increasing dependence on foreign countries for our energy supply; and
* A mounting debt that threatens our sovereignty and our children's prosperity.
George Bush and the Republicans who run Washington today, rather than live up to their promises of leadership and responsible government, instead offer a grim mix of needless division, ineptitude, and corruption.
George Bush's Washington tried drilling in precious wildlife preserves rather than live up to promises to free our nation's energy needs from unstable foreign sources of oil.
George Bush's Washington signed more unfair trade agreements rather than live up to promises to fix current trade rules to make them more fair to American workers and businesses.
George Bush's Washington has failed to make the homeland as secure as it needs to be, and they have disastrously mismanaged the war being fought by our brave men and women in Iraq.
This pattern of disgrace and disservice has served only to widen the divide between the American people and their government. In Washington itself, it has led to a dramatic coarsening of our politics which strangles the Capitol in do-nothingism.
After this year, I can only conclude that that the fundamental promise at the heart of America has been broken.
It does not have to be this way. Together, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to be the generation that renews the American Promise.
By putting our petty partisan disputes aside and reanimating our American values, we can ensure that through hard work, ingenuity and persistence every American can get ahead; that each generation will do better than the last; that our government will always be strong enough and competent enough to protect us from enemies from abroad and dangers here at home.
In the next year, All America PAC and I will be doing everything in our power to change the culture in Washington by electing to Congress men and women who share in our faith of a better tomorrow. To start off, I am curious to find out what you think is wrong with Washington, and what you believe the solution to be. I believe that at least part of the solution lies in bringing the American people back into the governing process.
By clicking here, you can share with me your ideas for fixing Washington.
Also, be sure to forward this email to all of your friends and family so that they, too, can participate.
Sincerely,
Evan Bayh
