Brattleboro to consider Bush impeachment

March 21, 2006

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. --The town will consider a resolution at its representative town meeting on Saturday that will call for the impeachment of President Bush.

If the resolution passes, Brattleboro would join five other communities that have asked Vermont's U.S. Rep. Bernard Sanders to file articles of impeachment against the president.

Brattleboro Town Representative Dora Bouboulis said she wanted Brattleboro to follow the trend begun by Newfane, Dummerston, Marlboro, Putney and Brookfield.

"If we have the courage to do it, hopefully other communities across the country will do it as well," she said.

Sanders has signed onto a bill that would call for an investigation into whether Bush misled the nation into the Iraq war and authorized illegal domestic spying.

Brattleboro uses a system unique in which 145 town representatives serve make the decision for the community on Town Meeting Day. The non-binding impeachment resolution will be taken up first.

"It's hard to say whether or not it will pass, because there's an awful lot of conservatives in that group," Bouboulis said.

She said she hoped it would generate discussion.

"We have felt the town meeting process is a really good place not just to protest, but to start an actual debate," Bouboulis said. "As a town representative last year, I was really disappointed on how little debate there was on any of the budget items."

The impeachment resolutions by Vermont towns has received nationwide attention.
