A woman was killed when three-ton concrete panels fell from the ceiling of a Big Dig tunnel and crushed the car she was riding in late Monday night.

What’s your reaction to the Big Dig ceiling collapse? Do you have any confidence in state officials who are responsible for the safety of the roadways? Will it make you think twice before driving through the other Big Dig tunnels?

I know for instance, Mark Warner should be responsible for the travesty of the traffic jam in Virginia, getting from the Maryland DC border into the first few Virginia cities on I95 shouldn't take 2 hours for a 2 mile drive

So should Mitt Romney.

Obviously though, a piece falling off the roof is an accident that is going to be blamed on John Kerry. That is what republicans do. That is what Karl Rove does.

My thoughts on this: What the hell were they thinking when they made a 'dropped' (or suspended) ceiling with concrete tiles? Most suspended ceiling tiles on the interior of buildings are made of fairly lightweight material. Not friggin' CONCRETE! shout.gif

Please also note that we have had Republican governors here in MA for the last 16 years. That trend should end soon.

I am surprised but don't know enough about construction technigues to comment with any semblance of knowledge.

I do know other places have concrete slabs overhead. (I often wonder about what we trust as far as engineering standards). The tie-backs are/were concrete,,,,but??

ps, did you go to Faneuil Hall for the Kerry speach and if so, did you see the nut with the Kerry/Edwards tee-shirt?

Poor Matt, he is being held responsible for decades of shennanigans...his tenure is 6 years?

Romney and the Dems are going to be all over this one...shame, shame, shame!

Most leaders in this state were aware of big dig investigations that went nowhere. All probably have idiot cousins who got "good jobs at good wages."

The tie-backs in this case were metal, and obviously they were not adequately fastened. I'd heard rumors that they were actually epoxied in place rather than being bolted. Then again, this is a tunnel under the harbor, so I don't know what the proper fastening technology should be. dontknow.gif

A bit off-topic, but in answer to your other question: I went to the Kerry speech at Faneuil Hall back in April (the dissent speech), and I thought it was fantastic. I wasn't able to make to the most recent one on energy and the environment, because I had to work that day. Did you know that JK and THK are working together on a book about the environment? I believe it is supposed to come out within the year.

Amoriello obviously was an unqualified person to be in charge. I sure hope he doesn't just become a scapegoat to excuse the rest of these people. Romney is only concerned to the extent that this could make him look bad.

Much as I loathe Romney, I don't think he bears much responsibility for the state of the Big Dig. Most of this happened before his time. But there's plenty of blame to go around, so he'd best duck if he knows what's good for him.

Well the Springfield Interchange Improvement Project should be completed by late next year, and that should help. A lot of that work was done under Warner, but I have acknowledge that the project was actually started under Warner's integrity-free Republican predecessor, James Gilmore.

He's responsible for traffic in Virginia? Hey, isn't this the Massachusetts subforum?

You may very well be right. Even more likely I think is that people working for one or more of the Right-wing Republican candidates will use this to attack Romney, who has to be liberal anyway because he's governor of Massachusetts (building substandard tunnels is one of those things liberals do, didn't Ann Coulter say that once?), besides being a dangerous Mormon heretic. Of course they won't be so tacky as to do more than conduct a whispering and e-mail campaign on the last point.

This is why I think Romney's White House ambitions are doomed. But just in case I'm wrong about that, please alert people in other parts of the country about what a lying snake Mittens is.

I dont think I blamed Romney. This project has been vacillating back in forth between engineering marvel and boondoggle for years before Romney came to office. I threw in a little dig (so to speak) about what I think Romney's priorities are.

Is this true?

QUOTE
Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff, lead contractor on the Big Dig, defended the use of the bolts and epoxy system in the I-90 connector yesterday.

``Supporting concrete ceiling panels by anchoring bolts to the roof with epoxy adhesive is widely and successfully used throughout the construction industry," said a company statement. ``The investigation of this tragic accident is still at an early stage. To determine the causes requires a thorough forensic analysis of design, methods, materials, procedures, and documentation."

The ceilings were not on the inside of a building. Whenver I see "concrete" on ceilings...it is many places, I always assume it is a spray on layer or a light weight concrete.

Romney is shameless. He is making the problem larger with his "
hundreds" of potential problems he is finding. Watch...he will save the Biug Dig like he saved the Olympics.

Thank god for the prejudices and bigotry of the conservative Christian community. I hope they vote in large numbers in the '08 GOP primary

Oh yes. Any photos anyone? I think the nut had a confrontation with another nut who tried to hold her measly little "wind farm" sign and steal the spotlight from the nut with the Kerry/Edwards tee-shirt...standing on his chair in front of all the cameras.

Her only winning election was as Romney's running mate. The only elected office she has held was as Romney's Lt. Gov. Her only record of governing was as his right-hand/understudy. There is plenty of reason to hang Romney around her neck.
