Seems Democrats on the far left, spurred on by support from groups like MoveOn.org, are tryin' to run single issue primary campaigns, eh? Here in Little Rhody an extremely effective Congressman Jim Langevin is bein' opposed in the Democrat primary by Jennifer Lawless, a Brown University professor, mainly 'cause of one issue - abortion.
Methinks her phoney claims of his weakness on other issues such as health care, workers rights and the war in Iraq are quickly dispelled if you actually examine his record. So too are her allegations of his support for the Bush administration, eh?
Listenin' to the debate between the two of them confirmed she's really a single issue candidate, though she does have radical soundin' solutions to other issues. Most of her proposals called for scrappin' many current programs, even if they're workin' and just need more fine tuning, and replacin' them with new bigger more costly programs that end up soundin' an awful lot like socialism, eh? Here in the Ocean State that dog won't hunt!
There's been little coverage of this race. Here's a couple articles concernin' it:
"Langevin, Lawless trade barbs over ads" Providence Journal, August 31, 2006
"Langevin, Lawless face off over Iraq war, abortion rights" Providence Journal, August 31, 2006
"Duplicating Lamont Win No Easy Task" Hartford Courant, September 5, 2006
IMHO the only way Lawless wins is if so many indepentdents (now 70% of RI's registered voters after recent defections by moderates from the RI Democrats) elect to vote in the GOP primary 'cause of the Chafee-Laffey contest leaves only those on the far left to vote in the Democrats' primary.
That'd also leave the door open for Carl Scheeler to beat the favored Sheldon Whitehouse for the Democrat candidate for Chafee's senate seat. If that happens methinks it'd doom Democrats chances in the November general elections in both races.
