Good Riddance to bad rubbish. Now the damage, and the bleeding can stop. But we will need a long time to repair the damage.

Heard an interesting commentary by John Dean on Olbermann last nite: the determination of who should carry the title of Worst President should go to the man who creates the most decades of damage. He says Nixon is still the leader in that cadre since we're still cleaning up his messes- but Shrub's 'Jason' method of governance will probably eclipse Nixon's by a full century.
Get out the champagne and start it chilling for Jan 20, 2009. Then the repairs can really begin, no matter who takes over. And I'll chill a couple of extra bottles if it should be a Progressive!

There's a story in the Boston Globe today, front page, left side, below the fold titled "Incoming Democrats face fiscal minefield" (by Rick Klein)...
"Nearly all domesticprograms paid for by the Federal government are level-funded through mid-February with no adjustments for inflation, a situation that will probably trigger cuts or reductions in such popular programs as veterans' affairs, children's healthcare, housing vouchers, and low-income fuel assistance. Democrats... therefore have to immediately choose between restoring any lost services and their campaign pledge to controlgovernment spending. The clash could expose tensions within the party in the crucual first weeks..."
"As the Republicans leave their control of Congress, they've decided to blow up the room," said SanatorDurbin of Illinois, the asst.Dem, leader. "They're leaving behind a disaster for us."

The purposeful destruction of the social contract is the way that Bill Moyers described it in the past.
A response to American polity similar to their response to Hurricane Katrina...
Remember all the noise the Repugnocrats made about the White House staffers taking the "W"s off the White House keyboards?

Yes, I would have thought this would have gotten a bit more attention.
This blog points my attention to Friday story about Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari, a reasonably large contributor to Republican congressional committees (more than $15,000 in the 2002 and 2004 campaign cycles). Alishtari was arrested on Thursday. And on Friday he was charged in federal court with attempting to secretly send $152,000 to Pakistan and Afghanistan to purchase equipment for terrorist training camps in Afghanistan.
Late Update: Funny. TPM Reader B points out that the New York Post chose a rather different way of reporting this story. Their lede: "A Westchester businessman and purported peace activist was nabbed by the feds for allegedly plotting to funnel more than $150,000 to terrorists at training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan."
No mention of Republican ties. Let me know when they follow up ...
Later Update: In fairness, the Daily News ran it pretty much the same way.
Never too Late for this Story Update: Oh that's interesting. Cunning Realist found this CV purportedly posted by Mr. Alishtari. In addition to other GOP donor awards, Alishtari says that he was appointed to something called the "White House Business Advisory Committee" in 2003. And CR ends with this point, referencing Alishtari's CV: "Note the entrepreneurial business background with a focus on technology/security. Have any of those businesses ever received government contracts or funds? Any direct or indirect contact in the past with anyone from the Bush administration or Congress?"
