From the later news reports this sounds like another case where the missing community mental health facilities, so long promised -- never properly developed -- could have prevented such an event.
As our population increases, there will be more individuals needing those treatment modalites and followup (many of them being warehoused in correctional facilities instead of medical treatment clinics). This is a preventable tragedy and the potential for similar incidents increases the longer the neglected services are absent.
This is another part of the Reagan legacy as is the commercial flight problems, aren't most of you old enough to recall those alpha moments.

This has been extremely open as well as the State. Right now health and human services is on TV and talking about treatment and care he received as a ward of the state.
I think there are four important issue.
Family's are grieving
a young man was so depressed he was suicidal
Why when a 20 yr old man destroys his own life can he take so many people with him in less then 6 minutes. ( AK47 two clips with 40 bullets per clip)
AK47 was an older gun and Russian made( gun owners collectible?)
These are people that if not known were public service (gift wrapping and managers at Von Mar), touching lives every day.
Westroads is not one of our newer malls and is not one of our largest but is on 120th and dodge and is on main bus routes in Omaha( major transit center).
So my issues are that a depressed young man was able to steal an automatic assault weapon from a relative and in taking his own life was able to take the eight people he killed.
All the good things of Nebraska are showing in abundance, Our responsive city services, our honesty and hopefulness and our compassion that has been shown with every report on the young mans depression and violent act.
