February 22, 2008 <h2 class="title" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Tensions Mount over Kosovo Independence</h2> Up to 200,000 Serbs massed in Belgrade on Thursday to protest against Kosovo's secession. Several of the protesters broke into the American embassy, setting fire to part of the building. In a recent study, Cato scholar Stanley Kober commented on NATO involvement in the region and whether the alliance is capable of handling renewed violence in the Balkans: "NATO, it should be remembered, is not the force it was in 1999; it is now heavily involved elsewhere....[T]he prospects for effective action — indeed, for the future of the alliance itself — could be bleak."
